The docks, harbours, and shoreline of Levenmouth have shaped the lives and livelihoods of local communities for generations. From Methil to Buckhaven, stories of working at sea, dockside industry, and coastal connections form a rich but often overlooked heritage. This February, we’re inviting the community to help bring those stories to light.
River Park Archaeologists and Wessex Archaeology are hosting a free, informal heritage event to celebrate and record the maritime history of Levenmouth. This is a chance for local people to share their memories, photographs, knowledge, and experiences of Methil and Buckhaven Docks, as well as life and work connected to the sea.
You don’t need any prior experience in archaeology or history — just an interest in the area and its past. Your lived experience is a vital part of understanding and preserving this heritage.
📅 Saturday 7 February
⏰ 1:00 – 4:00pm
📍 Methil Heritage Centre
Teas, coffees, and refreshments will be provided.
The event forms part of the Mapping the Maritime Forth Project, funded by Historic Environment Scotland and The Seafarer’s Charity. The project is looking for people from around the Forth to help map and record its maritime heritage, combining local knowledge with existing heritage records.
By crowdsourcing information, the project aims to:
Capture stories and memories that may not exist in official records
Build skills and confidence in researching local history
Share tools and resources to help communities document and preserve their heritage
The first phase of the project, running until February 2026, focuses on onshore maritime heritage. Using historic maps, participants help record the wide range of buildings, structures, and features connected to the sea. The second phase, running from January to June 2026, will explore navigation and shipwrecks within the Forth.
You can join the project at any stage. Resources are available online, and a programme of in-person and online workshops will take place over the coming months, giving participants opportunities to share findings and learn together.
