Over the last few months, our Branching Out participants have embraced the changing seasons outdoors — learning new skills, meeting inspiring local partners, and reconnecting with nature through creativity, calm, and community.
What is Branching Out?
Branching Out is a nature-based wellbeing programme that forms part of the Explore Outdoors project within the RPP. Designed to support anyone experiencing low mood or poor mental health, it offers a safe, relaxed, and welcoming space for people to enjoy the outdoors together.
Each programme runs for 12 weekly sessions, held exclusively in Fife’s beautiful green spaces. Every week, participants gather around a fire pit basecamp — a place to chat, reflect, and simply be — before taking part in a new activity. From bird box building and learning bushcraft skills, to pottery, horse therapy, and wood carving, each session is different and full of opportunities to connect with nature and each other.
October: Horse Therapy at The Big Hoof
In October, the group spent two unforgettable weeks at the Big Hoof base, surrounded by peaceful gardens and a pair of gentle horses — Sasha and Istia.
After getting to know the horses, everyone had the chance to take a turn riding in the training area. For some, it was their first time on horseback; for one participant, it was a moment of personal triumph, overcoming a past fear after a difficult experience years ago.
The group also enjoyed brushing the horses, cleaning their hooves, and leading them on a calm walk around the stables — much like the longer journeys that The Big Hoof team undertake across Scotland and beyond.
It was a truly heartwarming experience, full of smiles, confidence, and connection. A big thank you to Louis and Kiki for their kindness and hospitality!
Exploring the Shoreline with East Neuk Seaweed
Also in October, we welcomed Jayson Byles from East Neuk Seaweed for an eye-opening session all about seaweed and the incredible role it plays in our ecosystem.
Jayson shared his deep knowledge of the species found along Fife’s coastline — how they sequester carbon, protect our shores, and support marine life. Participants even had the chance to taste some seaweed-based treats, including seaweed sourdough and homemade pickles!
The group then set off on a coastal walk, exploring how seaweed contributes to the health and resilience of our natural environment. Huge thanks to Jayson for bringing such passion and insight — we hope to see you again at a future session! 🌿
Creative Carving with Woodswoman Kiri Stone
We were lucky with the weather when Woodswoman Kiri Stone joined us at Silverburn Park for a relaxing wood carving and whittling session.
Under Kiri’s guidance, everyone crafted their own wooden mushrooms — carefully carving and painting them to resemble the iconic fly agaric. It was a peaceful, mindful activity that sparked great conversation about the fungi found in our local woodlands during the autumn months.
Thank you, Kiri, for leading such a calm and creative workshop — we can’t wait to have you back again soon!
November: Pottery with Judith
In early November, we gathered around the fire pit for a ceramics session led by Judith. After a cuppa and some chat, Judith demonstrated how to make two types of clay pots.
Participants then pressed pinecones, needles, and bark into their creations — a beautiful way to capture the textures and memories of the day spent outdoors. Despite the heavy rain, the group found shelter and stayed focused, producing truly unique pieces.
Judith will fire the pots in her kiln, and we’ll return them to the group as a keepsake of a calm and creative day spent in nature.
A Season of Growth
From wood carving and seaweed foraging to horse therapy and ceramics, the past few months of Branching Out have been filled with discovery, connection, and moments of quiet reflection in nature.
Each week reminds us how powerful it can be to slow down, share time outdoors, and connect with the natural world — together.
A heartfelt thank you to all of our participants, partners, and facilitators for helping to make this programme so special. We’re looking forward to many more sessions to come!
