A Major Milestone for Levenmouth: Construction Begins on the River Park

  18-Nov-2025 |   Andrea Habeshaw

After years of community input, partner collaboration, and planning, the project is now moving from vision to reality. The River Park will transform the area known locally as “Doon the Dam” into a vibrant, accessible 4km green corridor running between the new Leven Rail Station and Cameron Bridge Station.

Led by Green Action Trust, with Mackenzie Construction delivering the works, the River Park will create a space that supports wellbeing, biodiversity, active travel, learning and community connection.

Key features will include:

New walking routes and mown grass paths

Lades and swales to manage water naturally

Pollinator meadows, blossom trees and enhanced wildlife habitats

Spaces for outdoor events, heritage walks and wellbeing activities

Opportunities for skills development through a future Green Skills Academy

This four-year project will help reconnect people with nature and celebrate Levenmouth’s rich cultural and industrial heritage.

A Strong Collaborative Effort

The River Park is supported by a partnership of:
Green Action Trust, SEPA, Fife Coast & Countryside Trust, Fife Council, and Archaeology Scotland.

Funding includes nearly £3 million from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, £423,000 from NatureScot, and contributions from Levenmouth Reconnected, Historic Environment Scotland, Diageo, SEPA, Green Action Trust and Fife Council.

Helen McCafferty, River Park Programme Manager at Green Action Trust, said:
“This is a landmark moment and a testament to the hard work and collaboration behind this project. We can’t wait for people to enjoy the park as a space for reflection, nature connection and community events. Some disruption is expected during construction, but the end result will be worth it.”

Construction Timeline

Work will run from mid-November to Spring 2026. Some areas will be fenced off for safety, with a contractor compound at Kirkland Walk beside Poplar Road. Access to the park will remain as open as possible.

Alongside construction, community activities such as heritage walks, health walks, yoga sessions and archaeological digs are already underway and will continue throughout the project.

Looking Ahead

The River Park will become a welcoming, biodiverse and inclusive space for residents and visitors, supporting health, heritage, nature and sustainability for the long term.

We look forward to sharing updates and celebrating future milestones as the River Park takes shape.
