The Leven Programme

The Leven Programme is all about bringing new life to the River Leven and the communities around it. Together, we’re working to make the river a cleaner, greener and more welcoming place — a place where nature can thrive, people can explore and connect, and local communities can benefit from new opportunities.

Formed in 2018, the programme brings together local people, community groups, businesses and public bodies who share one goal: to make a positive difference for the river, its wildlife and its surrounding towns and villages.

By improving the river’s health, creating better access between communities, and supporting wellbeing and green jobs, we’re showing what can be achieved when everyone works together.

Our vision for 2030 is bold:

The Leven catchment will be a living, breathing example of inclusive growth — where environmental improvements go hand-in-hand with social and economic opportunities.

River Park Programme — Our Main Live Project

The River Park Programme is the centrepiece of the Leven Programme. It is a four year programme from 2025 to 2028. It's a collection of six projects designed to reconnect people with the river and each other.

From celebrating local heritage and boosting outdoor learning, to improving green spaces, creating new paths and providing training, each project plays a part in making the River Leven a place for everyone to enjoy.

The River Park Projects

  1. Green Health Partnership – helping people connect with nature for better health and wellbeing.

  2. Three Archaeology Projects – uncovering the area’s rich industrial and cultural past:

    • Hidden Heritage

    • Methil Mill Dig

    • Building Capacity in Local Groups

  3. Community Events – bringing people together through fun, creative and educational activities.

  4. Interpretation – telling the stories of the river and its people through signage, trails and digital content.

  5. Education – inspiring learning through Explore Outdoors and Branching Out programmes.

  6. Green Skills Academy – supporting skills, training and employment in the growing green economy.

Why It Matters

For generations, the River Leven powered mills, mines and industry — the beating heart of Mid-Fife. But over time, pollution and neglect took their toll. Now, through the Leven Programme, we’re restoring the river’s natural beauty and bringing its communities together again.
